Very rich people are taking what belongs to students. In the past 25 years it's become much more difficult to attend school and to get a good job. College tuition has risen much faster than inflation, employers are eliminating higher-paying jobs and cutting benefits, and most students will face years of debt after college. Meanwhile, wages for high school graduates have dropped 20% (30% for males) since the 1980s. Inequality has grown much worse in the same period of time. The United States has the income distribution of a third-world country, with a small percentage of very wealthy people taking an increasingly large share of our productivity. And the rich are not supporting society: -- Average workers pay up to 40% in sales tax, payroll tax, income tax, and utility fees; -- Financial experts pay only 15% on million-dollar stock deals; -- Two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid NO federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005. |

How to contact your Illinois Congressperson: 1 Check this map to find your District Number. 2 Go to The Illinois Elections Page, search By Address or By District (click 'Congressional,' enter District Number). Click on the Congressperson's name for his/her address or fax number. 3 It is recommended that your class write one letter, but that it be sent to every Congressperson who has at least one of your students living in his/her district. See our Sample Letter for help in writing. Be sure to write it in your own words, and add your Congressperson's name and your own names and addresses. |
